Tips to Find People

How to do Online Searches for People
There are quite a few additional tips that I can give you to teach you how to find family, friends, classmates, old-colleagues and ex-military friends online. The first thing you should do is be sure to have as much information about the person before you start the search---Things like First Name, Last Name, Aliases, Maiden Name, Middle Name, names of family members and children and (ex) spouses.

It may also be helpful to know what schools the person has attended (the person in charge of the high school reunions is frequently easy to find and may have the address or phone number that you are looking for).

Start with whitepages.com or yahoo people search -- These options work best if the people haven't moved in some time and actually have a listed residence with their local phone company. You may also be able to do a reverse-phone number search by googling their telephone number and seeing what google delivers.

Check Social Networking Sites---If the person has an uncommon name, you may be able to find them on facebook.com or myspace. If you know what company they worked for, you'll be able to conduct a search on linkedin.com to try and find the person's current where-abouts.

Check other sites---Some sites that may be useful to you include zabasearch.com and zoominfo.

Reach out to old neighbors and friends--If online services don't solve your problem, you can try and find other old friends, neighbors, or coworkers of the person and ask them for help---It's like 6 degrees of separation---your chances of finding a person increases if other people know that you're looking for somebody.

You Can Use the Social Security Office to Find People

The United States Social Security Office provides an index of deceased Americans with a Social Security Number. You can use this free service to determine if the person you are looking for has passed away---But be warned, there may be many people of the same name---And the database does not provide the public with the where-abouts of living individuals. http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Can I use Public Records to Find People?

If you are trying to locate somebody and know what city and county they live in, you can use several forms of public records determine where they live. The Key Places to look include:
  1. County Recorders Office
  2. The city/county Treasurer's Office
  3. The County Court.

For example, if you are trying to find a person who you know lives (or lived in) Chicago... You can Google, "Chicago County" and find out that it is in Cook County. Then you find the Cook County Recorders Office (ccrd.info) and see if the individual has ever bought property or had a mortgage in the county. If they currently own property, you can go search the County Treasurer's website to find out where the real estate tax bills are being mailed to---Then you'll be able to find that person's mailing address and get in touch with that long lost relative.

Now, if you're looking for somebody who was never a property owner, then it's more challenging to locate them through public records---You could search the online court cases to see if they have ever been sued or arrested---but odds are pretty good that the addresses in those documents may have gone stale.
